I was browsing through my iTunes library recently and came across this recording I forgot I had that I did for my portfolio to get into the MFA program at MTSU. It’s me on acoustic guitar and Kevin Kelley on upright bass playing the old jazz standard “Misty.” Kevin Kelley is a former professor of mine at Kilgore College in Kilgore, TX.

“Misty” is pretty much the only jazz song I know how to play. It’s one of the songs I like to play when I really want to show off my guitar playing chops and impress people. The arrangement comes from a well-respected jazz guitarist named Barney Kessel. This was a version he did with a trio called The Poll Winners featuring Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums.

It took me forever to learn this song, Prof. Kelley played it perfectly on the first try just by sight reading off the page. Makes me sick.

Anyways, this recording is a little nostalgic for me. Enjoy.
